PROJECT DESCRIPTION

THIS STUDY INVESTIGATES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AN INTIMATE ARCHITECTURE AND A TECHNOLOGY ABLE TO PERFORM THROUGH AN EMBEDDED INTELLIGENCE.  UTILIZING RECENT ADVANCEMENTS IN THE TECHNOLOGY OF SHAPE-MEMORY ALLOYS, A PROTECTIVE ARCHITECTURAL SUIT HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO PROTECT AND ADAPT TO THE MOTION OF ITS USER BASED ON THE SPEED AT WHICH THE USER IS TRAVELING.

I HAVE UTILIZED A NICKEL-TITANIUM WIRE (BETTER KNOWN AS NITINOL) THAT REACTS IN A PARTICULAR WAY BASED OFF THE AMOUNT OF HEAT THAT IS INTRODUCED TO THE WIRE ITSELF.  THE WIRE, INITIALLY, IS TRAINED TO “REMEMBER” A PARTICULAR SHAPE OR FORM.  THE WIRE CAN THEN CHANGE SHAPE TO ANY NEW FORM, HOWEVER ONCE HEAT IS REINTRODUCED TO THE WIRE IT WILL TRANSFORM BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL “REMEMBERED” FORM.

 

THEREFORE, THE MOVEMENT OF THE WIRE, AND THUS THE ENTIRE PERSONAL ARCHITECTURE, IS DIRECTLY CONTROLLED BY THE AMOUNT OF HEAT INTRODUCED TO THE WIRE.  THE HEATING OF THE WIRE IS CONTROLLED DIRECTLY BY THE RATE OF TRAVEL (RPM OF BIKE WHEEL).  THE SPEED OF THE WHEEL CONTROLS THE AMOUNT OF CURRENT/HEAT GENERATED WHICH IS THEN PASSED ONTO THE WIRE AND THROUGH THE ARCHITECTURAL SUIT. 

THE SUIT, WHEN TRAVELING AT HIGH SPEEDS, BECOMES STREAMLINED AND AERODYNAMIC FOR MAXIMUM MOVEMENT AND FLEXIBILITY.  HOWEVER, IF AN ACCIDENT OCCURS, AND THE USER IS REMOVED FROM THE TRANSPORTATION DEVICE, THE STREAM OF CURRENT/HEAT IS BROKEN AND THE SUIT IMMEDIATELY BLOOMS TO BECOME A PROTECTIVE SHELL, ABSORBING THE SHOCK OF IMPACT.

IN THE SUITS FINAL STAGE THE IT CAN BE DISASSEMBLED INTO A TEMPORARY PARTIAL SHELTER FOR PROTECTION AGAINST THE ELEMENTS.
